What to buy

Duty-free beauty in Bali

One floor on the island is genuinely tax-exempt. Here is what it stocks, what it saves, and why the bag is handed to you at the airport.

Passport and onward flight required

We are not a retailer and take no commission from any store named here. Information is collected from public sources and editorial visits.

How duty-free actually works

Four things surprise first-time buyers, and the third one ruins plans if nobody mentions it beforehand.

  1. Who qualifies

International travellers leaving Indonesia. You will be asked for a passport and confirmed onward flight details at the till, and the details go on the transaction. Residents and domestic travellers pay standard retail.

  2. What it saves

Roughly 10 to 20 percent against Indonesian retail on the same item, because local tax comes off. Against your own high street it depends on the house and the exchange rate, so check one or two prices before you fly.

  3. You do not carry it out

Purchases are sealed and delivered to the airport. You collect them after immigration and security, shortly before boarding. If you want a fragrance for the rest of the trip, buy it at ordinary retail instead.

  4. Your allowance at home

Every country caps what you can bring in duty-free, and cosmetics count towards the general goods limit. Check yours before a large purchase, because a bill on arrival cancels the whole saving.

The airport range is narrower than the Kuta floor, which is the argument for buying in town and collecting on the way out.

Worth the trip, or not

The saving is real and modest. Whether it justifies an afternoon depends on how much you are buying.

Go if you want

  • To restock, not to sample The percentage only becomes money at volume. Two or three items barely covers the taxi.
  • Travel-retail exclusives Sets and sizes that do not reach ordinary counters, which is a better reason than the discount.
  • Guaranteed authenticity Authorised counters for every house on the floor. Skincare and fragrance are heavily counterfeited elsewhere.
  • Gifts to carry home Sealed, boxed and collected at the gate, which is exactly the shape a gift needs to be.

Go elsewhere if you want

  • To use it this week Duty-free is collected at departure. A pharmacy or a mall counter hands it over now.
  • A budget Tax off a luxury price is still a luxury price. Guardian and Watsons cover everyday needs.
  • Balinese products None on this floor. Local spa and botanical brands live in Seminyak and Ubud.
  • To browse without buying The passport and flight check happens at the till, so casual browsing here is a long drive for nothing.

Duty-free beauty questions

How much does duty-free actually save?

Roughly 10 to 20 percent against Indonesian retail on the same product, because local tax comes off. It varies by house and by product, and it is not a discount on top of a sale price.

Do I need my passport and ticket?

Yes, both, at the point of purchase. The store records your passport and departure flight to establish that you qualify. Without them the transaction is ordinary taxed retail.

Can I take the products with me straight away?

No. Off-airport duty-free goods are sealed and sent to the airport, and you collect them at a counter after immigration. Plan for that if you were hoping to use something during the trip.

Which brands are on the floor?

Fragrance runs to Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Jo Malone, Tom Ford, YSL, Hermes and Bvlgari. Skincare covers Estee Lauder, La Mer, Shiseido, SK-II, Clinique, Kiehl's and Lancome. Makeup includes MAC, NARS, Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay, Givenchy and Giorgio Armani.

Is there a limit on how much I can buy?

Not at the store, but there is at the other end. Your own country caps what you can import duty-free, and cosmetics count towards the general allowance. Check it before a large purchase.

Fold it into the departure day

Since the bag is collected at the airport anyway, this belongs on the way out rather than in the middle of a holiday. A driver, one stop on the bypass, and the collection counter after immigration.
