Shopping in Sanur

Denpasar Selatan 20 to 30 min from DPS Flat, and cyclable Mid to premium

A four-kilometre street, a real morning market, and the island's newest mall. The calm side of Bali, and the only district you can shop by bicycle.

Market from 06:00, boutiques 10:00 to 20:00

This page names only venues that can be verified. An earlier version listed several shops its own text marked as hypothetical, and those have been removed.

The shoreline at Sanur in the morning

One street and two lanes

Sanur runs along the coast rather than back from it, so almost everything sits on one long road with the sea on one side.

Jalan Danau Tamblingan

Length: 4 km

The spine of the district, running its whole length with Icon Bali Mall at one end and boutiques, galleries and cafes strung along the rest. Four kilometres is a long walk and a short cycle.

Flat, better by bicycle

Icon Bali Mall, boutiques, galleries, cafes

Off Jalan Pungutan

Length: A lane

Where Sindhu Market sits. Produce in the early morning and a night market from late afternoon, in a district that otherwise trades entirely on tourist hours.

Walkable, busy at dawn

Sindhu Market, produce, street food, batik

The beach path

Length: Runs the coast

A continuous promenade with stalls along it, and the reason Sanur suits people who would rather not deal with a road at all.

Paved, no traffic

Sarongs, beachwear, small craft stalls

Sanur is flat and has a proper seafront path, which makes it the one district in this guide where a bicycle is a serious option. Rental runs Ask For Price for the day.

Sindhu Market trades on local hours, from six in the morning, which no other district in this guide does.

What is here

One mall, one market, and a beach path. Fewer venues than Kuta by a distance, but the market is the only genuine one in this silo.

Older guides, including the previous version of this page, say there is no mall in Sanur. Icon Bali Mall opened in 2024 on Danau Tamblingan and that is no longer true.

When to be here

Sanur is the only district in this guide with a genuine early morning, and it is the best part of the day here.

  1. 06:00

    Sindhu Market, produce

Fruit, vegetables and offerings, trading for the neighbourhood rather than for visitors. Finished by about ten.

  2. 08:00

    Cycle the beach path

Flat, paved, no traffic, and the stalls are setting up. A bicycle for the day is Ask For Price.

  3. 10:00

    Boutiques and the mall open

Danau Tamblingan comes to life and Icon Bali opens. Air conditioning at one end of the street, sun at the other.

  4. 16:00

Sindhu turns into a night market

The same site, a different trade: street food and everyday goods, and the busiest it gets all day.

  5. 20:00

    Boutiques close

Around eight for the independents, with Icon Bali running to ten. Sanur is not a late district.

From the airport it is 20 to 30 minutes; from Kuta or Seminyak, 30 to 45 and a taxi of Ask For Price. A driver for the day runs Ask For Price.

What Sanur is good for

A wider spread than the district's size suggests, because it has both a mall and a market and almost nowhere else in the guide has both.

Who Sanur is right for

The calmest district in the guide, and the only one that gives you a real market and a new mall on the same street.

Come if you want

  • A real market Sindhu trades for the neighbourhood from six in the morning. Nothing else in this silo does.
  • To shop by bicycle Flat, with a paved seafront path and no traffic on it. Ask For Price for the day.
  • Calm No Kuta crowds, no Canggu roads, and the only district where the pace is genuinely gentle.
  • A new mall too Icon Bali opened in 2024 at one end of the same street, which is a combination no other district offers.

Go elsewhere if you want

  • Designer labels Seminyak carries the Indonesian designers and T Galleria the luxury houses. Sanur has neither.
  • Range One mall against Kuta's eight venues. It is a quieter district in every sense.
  • A late evening Boutiques close around eight. Kuta runs two hours longer and Sanur has no interest in competing.
  • Craft at source Ubud and the villages around it are ninety minutes away and are where the making happens.
Is there a mall in Sanur?

Yes. Icon Bali Mall opened in 2024 at Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 27, on the beachfront, at about 88,000 square metres. Guides that say otherwise, including an earlier version of this page, are out of date.

What time does Sindhu Market open?

Six in the morning for produce, finishing about ten. It then reopens as a night market from around four in the afternoon. Over 50 permanent stalls either way.

Where do I bargain?

At Sindhu Market and on the beach path, and nowhere else in the district. Offer about half the first price and expect to settle somewhere between 50 and 70 percent of it.

Can I really cycle?

Yes, and this is the one district where we would recommend it. Sanur is flat with a paved seafront path and no traffic on it. Rental is Ask For Price for the day.

How far is Kuta?

30 to 45 minutes, and a taxi runs Ask For Price. The airport is closer at 20 to 30 minutes.

What should a sarong cost?

Ask For Price on the beach path after bargaining. Krisna on the bypass sells them fixed from Ask For Price, which is the benchmark worth carrying in your head.
