The 20:00 closing time is the one to remember. Every other venue in this guide runs to 22:00, and people arrive here at half past eight expecting the same.
What it actually is
Founded in 1981 by Joseph Theodorus Wulianadi. The name is his initials with a G borrowed from his wife Gerardine, which tells you most of what you need to know about the place.
The jokes are the product
The shirts carry Indonesian wordplay - puns, inversions and gentle philosophy. Much of it does not translate, and that is worth knowing before you queue for one.
Often one size per design
Production is deliberately limited and many designs exist in a single size. If it fits and you like it, that is the decision made.
No photographs inside
The rule is enforced rather than posted and ignored. It surprises people, and it is the most common complaint from visitors who did not read ahead.
Two very different shops
Kuta is the original and is busy. Luwus, opened in 2005 up in Tabanan, is larger, cooler and far quieter. Same stock, opposite experience.

Luwus sits on the road towards Bedugul and the lake temples, so it works as a stop on that day out rather than as a trip of its own. Kuta is the one to use if you are staying in the south.

Over 500 designs across a handful of categories. Only the shirts have a published price band, so the rest says what it is rather than what it costs.

Prices are fixed here as they are at Krisna, so there is no bargaining to do. Krisna is a few minutes away on the same bypass and carries the range this deliberately does not.
Who it is right for
A genuine Bali institution that a lot of visitors enjoy and a lot of visitors do not understand. Both reactions are reasonable.
Go if you want
- Something not sold elsewhere The designs exist here and nowhere else, and production is limited on purpose.
- A piece of Bali's own culture Forty-five years of Indonesian humour in a shop, rather than an import aimed at tourists.
- Fixed prices Marked and final, the same as Krisna. No bargaining, no uncertainty.
- A stop on the way Kuta is ten minutes from the airport. Luwus fits a Bedugul day without a detour.
Go elsewhere if you want
- Your size Many designs come in one size only. If it does not fit, there is no other one.
- To photograph it Photography inside is not permitted, and the rule is enforced.
- To understand the joke The wordplay is Indonesian and largely untranslatable. Half the appeal will not reach you.
- Range Krisna is minutes away on the same road and carries twenty times the categories.

Eight in the evening, at both locations. That is two hours earlier than every mall in this guide, and it is the most common way visitors get caught out.
Why can I not take photographs?
It is the shop's own long-standing rule and it is enforced rather than merely posted. Nobody will explain it to you, and arguing does not help.
Do the shirts come in my size?
Often not. Production is limited and many designs exist in a single size. Treat what is on the rail as the entire stock for that design.
Which branch is better?
Kuta if you are staying in the south and want it done in an hour. Luwus if you are heading to Bedugul anyway and would rather browse without a crowd.
What do the slogans mean?
Mostly Indonesian puns and inversions, some of them philosophical and most of them untranslatable. If that is the reason you were going, adjust your expectations.
How much are the shirts?
Ask For Price. Everything is marked and fixed, so the price on the tag is the price.
