Four roads, and what is on them
Almost everything in Kuta sits on one of four roads, and three of them run parallel to the beach. That is why this is the one district you can do on foot.
Jalan Pantai Kuta
Length: Beach road
The road along the sand, with Beachwalk facing it and the art market at the northern end. Sunset traffic is heavy from four, and the pavement disappears in places.

Jalan Kartika Plaza
Length: About 1 km
Runs parallel one block back and holds Discovery and Lippo Mall within a few hundred metres of each other. Most Kuta beach hotels sit on it, which is why so much can be done without a car.

Jalan Legian
Length: About 2 km
The stall street. T-shirts, sunglasses, leather and silver, sold from open fronts with no marked prices. Bargaining is expected here and the opening number reflects that.

Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai
Length: Arterial
The fast road inland, and where the biggest names sit: T Galleria, Mal Bali Galleria, Krisna and Joger, all within a few minutes of each other. There is no pedestrian route worth taking.
Not walkable, drive it
Duty-free, department store, souvenirs
The first three are one walk. The bypass is not: it is a fast arterial with no usable footpath, whatever the map suggests about the distance.

- Beachwalk Shopping Center Open-air, three levels, over 200 tenants, opposite the sand on Jalan Pantai Kuta.
- Discovery Shopping Mall On Kartika Plaza, with a rear terrace onto the beach. Surf brands and mid-range prices.
- T Galleria by DFS On the bypass. The only dedicated duty-free floor in Bali.
- Lippo Mall Kuta Partly underground, 500 metres from the beach. Everyday needs and a cinema.
- Mal Bali Galleria At the Simpang Siur junction. Matahari, Hypermart and local prices, open since 1996.
- Park 23 Two kilometres north in Tuban, under ten minutes from the airport.
- Krisna The flagship on the bypass trades 24 hours. Fixed-price souvenirs at volume.
- Joger Slogan T-shirts since 1981, on the bypass. Closes at eight, unlike everything else.
- Kuta Art Market Near the beach entrance. Carvings, sarongs, textiles and silver, and the one place in this list where you bargain.
No other district on the island comes close to this. The nearest is Sanur with one mall, and Ubud with none at all.
When to be here
Kuta runs later than any other district, and the difference between a good afternoon and a bad one is mostly about heat and traffic.

The art market opens
Kuta Art Market and the Legian stalls start around eight. Quiet, cooler, and the best hour to bargain.

The malls open
All of them, together. Start with Beachwalk if you want brands, Discovery if you want surf.
- 13:00
Get indoors
Beachwalk is open-air and hard work in the early afternoon. Lippo Mall is enclosed and partly underground, which is the right answer for an hour.

The sunset window
Discovery's rear terrace and Beachwalk's upper level both look at the water. Book if you want a table rather than a spot.
- 18:00
Avoid the bypass
Between four and seven the road to T Galleria and Krisna roughly doubles. Do that end of the district in the morning.
- 22:00
Malls close
Ten at night. The Legian stalls run about as late, and the cinemas run past it.
The airport is 15 to 20 minutes away, which makes Kuta the one district that works on an arrival or a departure day rather than only in the middle of a trip.

The only district that covers every tier, from a Ask For Price market sarong to a watch on the duty-free floor.

Prices are fixed and marked everywhere on this list except the art market and the Legian stalls. Knowing which side of that line you are standing on is most of the skill here.
Who Kuta is right for
It has more of everything than anywhere else, and it is the loudest and most crowded district on the island. Both statements are the same fact.
Come if you want

Go elsewhere if you want
- Quiet This is the busiest strip in Bali, and after dark Jalan Legian is relentless.
- Craft made here Kuta sells souvenirs; Ubud sells what the villages make. They are different things.
- Boutique design Seminyak and Canggu carry the independent labels. Kuta carries the chains.
- A calm afternoon Sanur is thirty minutes away and is the opposite of this in every respect.

Six with pages of their own inside the district, plus Krisna and Joger on the bypass and the art market by the beach. Beachwalk, Discovery and Lippo are within a kilometre of each other.
Can I walk between them?
Between Beachwalk, Discovery, Lippo and the art market, yes, and most Kuta hotels are inside that circle. The bypass venues are not walkable and should not be attempted on foot.
Where do I bargain?
The art market and the Legian stalls, and nowhere else in Kuta. Offer about half the first price and expect to settle somewhere between 50 and 70 percent of it.
Is there duty-free?
Yes, at T Galleria by DFS on the Bypass Ngurah Rai. It is the only dedicated duty-free floor in Bali, and purchases are collected at the airport rather than carried out.
When is the best time to come?
Morning for the market and the bargaining, late afternoon for the beachfront terraces. Avoid the bypass between four and seven, when travel times roughly double.
How far is the airport?
15 to 20 minutes to the beach end, and under ten to Park 23 in Tuban. Kuta is the only district that fits comfortably into an arrival or departure day.
